The NRA-ILA (National Rifle Association Institute for Legal Action) announced in it's latest newsletter that although gun sales soared in 2008 and 2009 violent crime went down. Hold on....before everyone gets excited that the NRA has such great statistics we have to ask where did those statistics come from?
Believe it or not, the information the NRA released actually came from and FBI crime statistics report. I won't duplicate all the information in the report but I will give you a few highlights and a link to the report itself.
In 2008 and 2009 as gun sales took off the murder rate dropped by 7.2%. Now that seems to kind of derail all the anti-gunner rhetoric that if there are more guns there will be more murders. Does it not?
The decrease in murders translates to an 8.2% decrease per capita in you take into consideration the increase in population both legal and illegal.
The stats also translate to a 10.5% decrease in murders since the 2004 expiration of the weapons ban through 2009.
Put all this information together and you have a 45-year low in our nations murder rate. Hmmm...more guns, less crime, imagine that!
